With a long, strong background in athletics, swimming, baseball and football, Paul has been a passionate runner since the early 1980s, running handy times for a country lad over the years: 800m (1.59.8), 1500m (4.00.1), 3km (8.42), 5km (14.43) and 10km (32.22). Between 1986 and 1991 Paul raced sprint and Olympic distance triathlons, with best off-the-bike run times of 16.15 (5km) and 33.10 (10km).

In more recent years Paul has run 1:12.13 and 1:15.10 half-marathons. A weekly dose of a tempo run, intervals, rolling hills, and a long run are still his best friends and worst enemies. Casual basketball and regular strength training, cycling and swimming also keep him sane
